The unprecedented number of defections in Myanmar today indicates that the Myanmar army is struggling to hold its rank and file together in the face of nationwide popular resistance against its rule. Given the importance of defections to the future of Myanmar, this article uses survey interviews with 50 defected soldiers and many Spring Revolution stakeholders to better understand the reasons why soldiers leave, or stay in, the Myanmar army.
Voices from Exile: The Safety Needs of Myanmar Women Journalists
The survival of exiled Myanmar media relies on the survival of media professionals, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists’ rights to practice their profession securely. The urgency of safeguarding these rights cannot be overstated in Myanmar’s post-2021 coup landscape, especially considering the junta’s relentless efforts to suppress dissenting voices and spread disinformation.
The February 2021 coup in Myanmar shook the whole nation and changed the trajectory of the lives and livelihoods of everyone in Myanmar. Our research focuses on the impact the coup has had on the millions of youth across Myanmar. This paper and the research it entails asks the question, “What are the challenges for politically active youth in accessing information, skills, and learning while they are engaged in the movement for federal democracy?”
Between late May and early June 2023, Exile Hub conducted an extensive needs assessment survey among the first batch of 20 Critical Voices Production Grantees for 2023. This endeavor aimed to grasp the grantees' immediate needs, concerns, and potential avenues for additional support that Exile Hub could provide.
