Meet Kyi, a 23-year-old student activist and proud member of Myanmar’s queer community, who stands at the intersection of the pro-democracy movement and LGBTQI+ advocacy. As part of the Queers of Burma Alternative, Kyi continues to fight for freedom and equality, even while pursuing a degree in economics at Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand; a path that diverged from their original dream of becoming a diplomat in Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Kyi’s journey has been shaped by both adversity and resilience. Growing up, they faced the weight of rigid societal and religious expectations that sought to confine them to traditional gender roles. In high school, outdated norms dictated social interactions, leading to bullying and persistent discrimination. But Kyi refused to be silenced. From a young age, they boldly challenged the notion that “men should act like men,” demonstrating an unshakeable spirit that would come to define their activism. That spirit led Kyi to the East Yangon University Students’ Union, where they became an influential member of the Youth Committee and later served as Undersecretary for the West Yangon Division. Their commitment extended beyond student movements; Kyi became a passionate advocate for labor rights and environmental justice, earning recognition as a Clean-Up Ambassador from Singapore for their dedication to community service and positive change.

The military coup in 2021 marked a turning point in Myanmar’s history, and like all civilians, in Kyi’s life also. Rather than retreat, Kyi’s resolve only deepened. They joined the Alliance of Students’ Union and bravely relocated to Karenni State to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), providing basic education to children affected by the conflict. Between 2021 and 2023, Kyi continued their activism with the Social Democratic Party, contributing vital research and serving as a steering committee member of the General Strike Committee. By mid-2023, after years of relentless frontline work, Kyi made the difficult but necessary decision to step back and rest.

Yet even in this period of reflection, Kyi came face to face with a painful truth: discrimination against queer people persists, even in exile. Safe spaces, resources, and supportive networks remain limited, leaving many LGBTQI+ individuals isolated and underserved. But Kyi’s determination to fight for justice never wavered.

Their journey with Exile Hub began shortly after, opening new doors for advocacy. Through the Critical Voices Fellowship in 2023, Kyi found a platform to amplify queer narratives. Inspired by this opportunity, they launched a groundbreaking podcast series on queer feminism, producing six powerful episodes that capture the lived experiences, struggles, and triumphs of queer individuals. With the support of Exile Hub, Kyi gained invaluable skills in podcasting, journalism, and storytelling; tools they now use to continue pushing for social change.

Kyi’s message is clear and urgent:

I call for solidarity. It would mean a great deal if organizations and the international community could issue heartfelt statements reflecting their commitment. We need equality and acceptance in our broader society. Let us unite in a spirit of love and unity, free from oppression and discrimination.”

Kyi’s story is more than a personal journey; it is a rallying cry for all of us. It underscores the power of youth activism, the necessity of intersectional movements, and the importance of amplifying voices that are too often left unheard. Through Kyi’s courage and persistence, we are reminded that change is possible when we stand together.

At Exile Hub, we amplify the voices of queer communities by providing a platform for their stories and experiences. Through connection and support, we empower individuals to share their journeys, fostering understanding and acceptance. In celebration of Pride Month, here are the voices they wish to share.
