Mohinga Matters is a group of passionate storytellers from Myanmar with over 10,000 social media followers, dedicated to advocating for freedom of expression. They primarily publish in English, targeting a youth audience. Initially, their goal was simple: to invite aspiring writers to share their thoughts on sports, pop culture, book reviews, and current affairs with like-minded peers.
However, everything changed after the coup in Myanmar. Mohinga Matters explained, “When the military coup occurred in 2021, we decided to report on the situation to share our struggles with the world. While core writers focused on daily updates, friends skilled in graphic design and illustration contributed to our daily, weekly, and monthly publications.”
In 2023, Mohinga Matters received support from Exile Hub’s Critical Voices Grant, which helped fund three issues of their digital magazine in April, May, and June.
“It was incredibly rewarding to finally compensate our contributors after months of volunteer work. The digital training was insightful and effective, and the opportunity to be part of the fellowship was a meaningful recognition for us.” Mohinga Matters expressed their appreciation of the Critical Voices Grant.

Mohinga Matters stands out by prioritising personal experiences related to local stories, the educational crisis, and cultural significance, helping readers connect on a deeper level. This grassroots approach brings out the empathy and understanding often lacking in mainstream media. Exile Hub believes that supporting these projects is essential for promoting local voices and addressing urgent issues in Myanmar.
Mohinga Matters expressed their commitment, saying, “We hope to continue the fight for freedom of expression in our country—even beyond the victory of the resistance.”
